The Heart of advocacy: Empowering neurodivergent voices

Advocacy is more than just speaking up; it is the core component of resource and support provision. In Australia, navigating the complexities of disability services can be overwhelming. Advocacy simplifies this journey, ensuring your rights are respected and your voice is heard.

At TheAutisticTeacher, advocacy means championing person-centred planning and advocating for your rights. We focus on what truly matters to you and your family, building our framework around your needs while teaching self advocacy skills that support selfdetermination and resilience.

Self advocacy

Self-advocacy does not mean saying what other people want to hear. It means sharing what is important to you.

Self-advocacy can look like:

  • Asking for a quiet space.

  • Using AAC, writing or texting instead of speaking.

  • Asking for extra processing time.

  • Explaining your sensory needs.

  • Asking questions when something is unclear.

  • Telling people how they can best support you.

Advocacy, Self determination and Resilience

Self-Advocacy, Self-Determination and Resilience are three skills that help you live the life you choose. Everyone deserves to have a voice, make choices, and be treated with respect. These skills can improve confidence, independence, wellbeing, and quality of life, which is why they are central to my practice.

Self-Advocacy – speaking up about what you need and what is important to you.

Self-Determination – making choices about your own life

Resilience – learning ways to cope with challenges and keep moving forward.

Resilience

Resilience is the ability to manage challenges, recover from setbacks, and keep trying. Many autistic people have experienced misunderstanding, exclusion or difficult situations. Because of this, resilience is not about "being tougher." It is about having the right supports, strategies and people around you.

  • decisions as much as possible.

Why are these skills important?

Autistic people communicate differently from neurotypical individuals. Many autistic people may not feel that they are able to advocate for themselves independently. This impacts each persons self-determination and resilience, impacting their quality of life. In these situations, parents, carers, guardians, or trusted supporters may advocate with them or on their behalf. At TheAutisticTeacher we support the development of advocacy skills for the individual and their support systems.

Good advocacy involves:

Protecting their human rights

Listening to the person's communication

Respecting their preferences

Self-Determination

Self-determination is a crucial skill needed throughout life, yet neurodivergent people often experience lower self-determination than peers without disabilities. Self-determination means making decisions about your own life.

It includes:

  • Knowing what you enjoy

  • Understanding your strengths

  • Recognising the supports that help you succeed

  • Setting goals

  • Making choices that match your values.

Self-advocacy can be learned at any age. Children often begin by making simple choices and learning to express what they need.

TheAutisticTeacher supports children by:

  • Offering choices

  • Listening to their opinions

  • Encouraging communication

  • Including them in decisions that affect them.

Self-advocacy and self-determination can help you:

  •          Have more choice and control.

  •          Build confidence.

  •          Increase independence.

  •          Access the supports you need
